It does not seperate from the rail mount, but then again it is only designed to be a weapon light. That said, it is nice and bright. I have a feeling the batteries might be a bit expensive, but I haven't looked for any yet. Just remember to take the batteries out whenever you're not using them, as far as I;ve been able to tell, the direction you place the batteries in don't matter, it alwys works.
