The CYMA CM 040 Full Metal AKS 101 is an excellent reproduction of its authentic counterpart. This A.E.G. comes standard full metal with a metal receiver, receiver cover, side folding stock, and barrel assembly. This gun, for what you pay for is surprisingly sturdy. I've dropped it before, and almost slammed it when I tripped myself once, and nothing more than a few scratches have appeared on the exterior. On the inside, I'm sure it's the same; most CYMAs that are of the later models are built like tanks, and surprisingly enough, the performance with an 8.4v 1100mAh stick type (the stock battery) isn't too bad, but the life leaves more to be desired. Also, the magazine isn't the best hicap, but it functions.
- Hefty (not entirely too heavy, but it has weight to it)
- Internal sturdiness
- Somewhat lackluster internals after a while
- Low Battery Life
- Alright hi-cap

The CM.040D is different from CYMA's previous AK-styled airsoft rifles. Interestingly, it uses a different design from even previous versions of the CM.040. Unlike previous offerings from CYMA, this rifle is a VFC clone, and a high quality one at that. Everything that is metal on the real gun is metal (steel, not pot metal) on this, leaving only the handle and foregrip as plastic (in line with the synthetic furniture on the real one). This gun is labeled an AK-101, but looks identical to a late-model AKS-74, as the primary difference between the real 74 and 101 is the caliber (5.45mm versus 5.56mm). The only problem I've had with the exterior was that the rear sight was somewhat wobbly, but the entire rear sight block can be replaced with one from an actual AK for about $30. Overall this gun matches the real steel AK-74 very well.
The gun disassembles easily, requiring just two pins to be knocked out to remove the barrel assembly and two screws to remove the hop-up, although note that a gear on the gearbox prevents it from easily sliding out of the body, so use a screwdriver to get a bit of leverage and bend the body far enough for it to come out.
Performance-wise, it does very well for the price. It hits hard, at just under 400 with .20s- I recommend using .25s, as it has more than enough power, and the improved accuracy makes a big difference at longer range. The included battery is a decent stick-type NiMH, and provides a good rate of fire, but is only 1400mAH which may not be enough for longer games. Only stick-types will work, as the battery runs along the top of the gearbox into the rear sight block. A high-cap magazine is included, which works fine but has all the usual high-cap flaws- CYMA sells 150-round midcaps quite cheaply, and they work much better.
Overall, this is an excellent rifle. It has great externals, and comes with a strong spring. For beginners, the battery is adequate and the internals are better than most other guns in the price range. For more veteran players, the starting spring doesn't require replacement, making it a bit simpler and cheaper to upgrade, although finding a battery that fits may be a concern. Still, for the externals alone, this gun is worth every penny.
Bottom line: CYMA has improved their build quality immensely over the past few years, and this gun does not look nor feel its price. If you're looking for an affordable AK-type AEG but don't want the overused and outdated AK-47, this is the gun to get.
-High stock muzzle velocity
-Better battery than most Chinese guns come with
-Only works with stick batteries due to skeletal stock
-Nothing special about barrel, hop-up, or gearbox (besides the spring)
-No rails to attach useless Chinese optics to
-Same weight as real thing, not for kids
